Printmaking

Paintings | Prints

I first learned printmaking in 1986, when I was awarded a full scholarship for a six-week residency at the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts. Given our choice of majoring in painting, jewelry-making, sculpture or printmaking, I went for paper (natch).

Learning printmaking was, to a 16-year-old, like being handed the keys to the car. Were they really going to let me use acids, metal cutters and guillotines? They were, and I did.

It freed me creatively from the styles of painting and drawing I'd studied prior to that point, and gave me a new confidence.

I haven't had access to a press until recently, but I've continued to make linoleum block prints. I've also just attended an inspiring workshop on photopolymer printmaking, and not long ago picked up a second-hand Gocco screenprinter for playing with. Good times ahead!
